How to choose a floor tile

Rules and recommendations for choosing tiles

When choosing a ceramic tile, you need to pay attention to the following parameters:

Thickness. For floor coverings, thicker panels are needed, and thin ones are also suitable for walls. It should be understood that even a small thickness of the lining reduces the internal volume of the room

Wear resistance. There are 5 classes of wear resistance. The first and second are suitable for use at home in rooms with low traffic, for example, in the bathroom. The third is designed for laying in more passable areas that have to be washed more often. The fourth is suitable for laying where often and a lot of walking, for example, in the hallway. The fifth one is designed for public spaces: offices, shops, restaurants, as well as for the street

The presence of glaze. Glazed tiles are suitable for facing the surface inside the house, unglazed tiles are used for work on the street, decoration of facades.
Surface type: matt or glossy, smooth or textured, raised. This is important when choosing a finishing material for the bathroom, where it is undesirable that the floor is smooth and slippery. A raised and textured surface is undesirable at the entrance to the house, as it collects dirt and debris, it is more difficult to care for it.
Installation method: with or without seams. Seamless laying looks more interesting, but it requires high-quality materials with perfect geometry, as well as a high-class master tiler

How to calculate the required number of tiles

To calculate the required amount of material, not to overpay for the excess, you can use calculators on specialized sites, ask for help from professionals or calculate yourself.

To calculate the number of tiles for the floor, you need to find the floor area and divide it by the area of one plank. If a part of the floor is occupied, for example, by a shower cabin, then the area of its base must be subtracted from the floor area. The calculation is performed regardless of how the tile is laid out in a straight or diagonal. To the resulting result, you need to add 10 percent in reserve. This is required so that there is no shortage of material due to marriage, scrap, sloppy cutting

Porcelain stoneware differs from ceramic tiles in its production method and composition. Both are made from a mixture of clay, spar and quartz. But for porcelain tiles, they take more viscous and dense clays, and for tiles – lighter and more airy. In the manufacture of porcelain stoneware, the material is pressed harder, expelling air from it. As a result, the products are very dense, with a minimum number of pores.

This determines the advantages of porcelain stoneware:

it is durable, wear-resistant, not afraid of mechanical damage: it does not form scratches, chips, cracks;
resistant to temperature changes;
it does not wear out for a long time, retains its color and texture, does not fade in the sun;
it can be washed with any household chemicals;
due to the minimization of pores, it does not absorb dirt.

Thanks to these advantages, porcelain stoneware is widely used for facing surfaces in rooms with high traffic, difficult operating conditions, as well as outside the home. They are decorated with outdoor terraces, balconies, paths. It is also suitable for installation in bathrooms, swimming pools, kitchens, corridors and public spaces with high traffic

Disadvantages of porcelain stoneware

But there are also disadvantages of porcelain stoneware. The most basic is the weight. It is significantly heavier than tiles. Because of this, it is rarely used for wall cladding and other vertical surfaces. The material requires more careful preparation of the base, so that it can withstand such a mass, does not deform. Work with granite should be more qualified and experienced craftsmen. It is more difficult to process, cut. Also, the disadvantages include a higher price than the tiles

How to choose the right color

The choice of shade depends on your personal preferences. General rule: lighter shades visually enhance the room, darker-make it intimate, cozy, warm. Most manufacturers offer companion colors in their collections. Designers and consultants will help you choose a combination of options. You can use the constructors on the websites of sellers or manufacturers of ceramics

Ceramics – the most unpretentious finishing material. It is enough to wash it with ordinary water, adding the usual household chemicals if necessary. Do not abuse the compositions containing acids and chlorine. Any cleaning agent is first checked on an inconspicuous small area. It is better to use specialized formulations produced or recommended by ceramic manufacturers.

To make the surface shine, it is important to maintain cleanliness, always wipe the tile dry, so as not to leave water stains and lime deposits on it. From folk remedies to remove plaque that prevents shine, you can use a solution of vinegar, ammonia and soda
